Discipline isn’t always about what to do

Sometimes discipline is about what to stop doing. Instead of finding time to do more, you can focus on removing what doesn’t suit or work for your life. We’ve all tried to stop a variety of habits, but perhaps there are some you haven’t considered.

Much of yoga is about removing what doesn’t work any longer, rather than adding more to you, or your day.

Try letting go of something that doesn’t really feel like it is you. Perhaps you have picked up a habit or two that have nothing to do with who you feel you are, or what you are actually trying to accomplish. For some people, saying “no” all the time becomes habit rather than the result of thoughtful dissent. For others, cooking something with bread or pasta just seems normal, even though there are so many other options that are tasty and could add to their own enjoyment of cooking. Do you have a  habit of irritation? Maybe you aren’t naturally irritated, but you just got used to it at some point.

Pay attention during the day and find one thing you could leave off. Then, when you notice, breathe, let go of it, and see what can emerge. It is never too late to change a direction. (I find this is especially true with attitudes. )

Pose of the Day: Pigeon – if you always lean forward, try staying upright or even leaning back a little. Play with the pose some.

Yogic Concept of the Day: Let something go that doesn’t seem to be yours.
