Alright… I can’t help it. I am a hopeless football fan and I love yoga, so what was I supposed to share on the Friday before the Superbowl?
If you watch the games, you can tell fairly quickly how necessary flexibility is for the athlete to be able to get up and walk after some of the flips and hits they take. But do you ever wonder what the pros really think about yoga? I mean, we all know they are using yoga now as part of their training.
I found this clip from 2009: Giants and Yoga
It is sort of rewarding to see they are working with the same obstacles/ challenges we all face on the mat. Don’t you agree? The Yoga Mat, the great equalizer! And yet, you can see that they have really begun to get an appreciation for the effect yoga has on them.
Honestly, it doesn’t matter what kind of work you do in the world. Most of us are not football players. Most of us do not have high stakes jobs where every moment can bring loud cheers or personal maiming.
But whatever work you do, you are sure to come up against challenges and obstacles that you will eventually need to deal with. A boss can be your tackle. A co-worker can be the intimidating guy talking bad before the “play.” Your practice of yoga can bring you into a new way of thinking, and help you to develop more fearlessness in whatever you set your mind to. How? With regular practice, you will constantly be coming up to challenges that you will eventually overcome. This is the truth. How you overcome the challenges may be individual. You may not always be mastering what you initially thought you were! And when you are constantly overcoming challenges, you actually feel (in the body) that one more challenge is not a block but an opportunity.
I am sure with the Superbowl hanging in the balance, having yoga practice is supportive in creating the mindset necessary to let the moment just be what it is for each player. The ability to focus and relax with the reality in front of them must be a truly valuable gift with so many millions of people watching their individual efforts as they use their bodies, spirits, and minds to play for the win.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any videos about the New England Patriots and yoga… but, who knows. Perhaps they enjoy this kind of work, too.
And for those of you who enjoy the other football: Ryan Giggs of Manchester United.
